Dawn News Group in Pakistan

Dawn News was Pakistan's 24-hour Urdu news channel. Based in Karachi, the station is a subsidiary of Pakistan Herald Publications Limited (PHPL), Pakistan's largest English-language media group. The test transmission of the station occurred on May 25, 2007, and the channel went live on July 23, 2007. On May 15, 2010, Dawn News converted into an Urdu news channel after successful test transmission of four hours a day. The conversion is mainly due to its financial crisis and thin viewership in the country. Now Express 24/7replaced it as the Pakistan's only English news channel for a brief time, which was also then shut down by Express Media Group for financial reasons.
Dawn News' Test Transmission was launched by former President of PakistanPervez Musharraf. The complete launch of the channel coincided with the result of the Supreme Court case which cleared the Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, who had been suspended by General Musharraf. The channel was initially housed in Haroon House, the head-office of PHPL, but later moved to its current premises in West Wharf, Karachi.
The channel has an online stream available on its web site for foreign viewing.

History

The founder of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah launched the Dawn newspaper in the 1940s- it is the oldest English language newspaper in Pakistan.
The Dawn Media Network launched DawnNews, Pakistan’s first English language news and current affairs television channel, according to DawnNews they vow to "provide its viewers with a medium that is responsible, credible and balanced.
After a brief test transmission, the channel went live on July 23, 2007. Over past three years the channel has established its fame being the most credible voice in the murky pool of electronic media, in Pakistan.
Probably, the most talented and hardworking journalists of present time have been associated with the channel since the beginning. Some of them left to pursue their career in the same profession. Nonetheless, with superb hard-work and dedicated they converted the dream into a reality.
Keeping in view the public demand, DawnNews has decided to launch a separate Urdu news channel. But before launching the separate channel, it has started a three-hour Urdu transmission within its English channel’s airtime. The purpose is to get valuable feedback from the viewers. So far the feedback is tremendous.
DawnNews has broken a number of big stories. It was DawnNews which exclusively broadcast the footage of the assassin of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. It was DawnNews that got official confirmation from Pakistan that lone surviving gunman of Mumbai terror attacks – Ajmal Kasab – was a Pakistani.
Besides, DawnNews has covered major events including Lal Masjid operation, lawyers’ movement, military operations in tribal areas and 2008 general elections. Most of the time, the channel beat its rivals despite limited resources.
Dawn News transmission is watched in all urban areas of Pakistan. It also has access to the rural population, wherever the cable reaches. Dawn News is in agreement with several satellite TV channels, which include BBC World, Sky News, ABC News and Al-Jazeera and can be watched in the US, Europe, Middle East and Africa. In U.K. it can be accessed through Sky cable at Channel 845.

France says strike on Syria possible by Wednesday

French President, Francois Hollande, said on Friday that a military strike on Syria could come by Wednesday.
He was of the view that Britain's surprise rejection of armed intervention would not affect his government's stand.
In an interview to the Le Monde daily on Friday, Hollande said that France wanted firm action against the Damascus regime.
The French leader had earlier vowed to “punish” President Bashar al-Assad’s government for an alleged chemical weapons attack on August 21, which killed hundreds.
The president declared that the British Parliament’s withdrawal from the proposed action against Syria would not affect France’s resolve.
“Each country is free to choose whether to take part in such an operation or not. That holds true for Britain and France,” he said.
He ruled out strikes while inspectors from the United Nations were in Syria investigating the alleged chemical attack. They would leave on Saturday, according to UN Chief Ban ki-moon.
The French parliament is due to meet on Wednesday for an emergency Syria session.
In support of his decision, Hollande also said there was a “body of indicators pointing to the responsibility of the Damascus regime.”
He declared that the chemical attack could not go unpunished.
He further stated that he would have a “meaningful exchange” with the president of the United States (US), Barack Obama on Friday.
The US, while reserving the right to act alone, had also stated that it was hoping for an international coalition in Syria.
Hollande, however, ruled out strikes while the UN inspectors were in Syria investigating the alleged attack. UN chief Ban Ki-moon has said they were expected to leave Syria by Saturday morning.

Google Street View Driver Detained by Thai Villagers

Google Street View Driver Detained by Thai Villagers

If you were ever angry at Google for photographing your house and putting it up in Street View for all the world to see, learn that you are not alone. And then maybe send a nice gift basket to the people of Sa-eab village, northern Thailand.
About 20 Sa-eab residents stopped a Google Street View car and detained the driver, accusing him of being a government agent who was working for a controversial dam project.
The Thai villagers did not wait for the authorities to intervene and decided to take matters into their own hands. First they took the driver to a local office to interrogate him.
The man must have given the right answers, as the 20 Sa-eab residents then took him to a temple, where they asked him to swear on a Buddha statue that he was not spying on them on behalf of the dam project, according to Thai news website Prachatai.
Eventually, the villagers released the Google Street View driver and apologized both to him and to Google for the misunderstanding. They even apologized to the entire Thai nation and the world and explained that there had been many repeated cases of agents trying to survey the area in disguise.
Google responded by acknowledging the fact that any new project, including Street View, may encounter unexpected challenges and insisted that their mapping project fully respects Thai laws and only features images taken on public property.
Sa-eab, Phrae province, is located about 385 miles north of Bangkok and is known for its opposition to dam projects, both by environmental groups and by local villagers.
Thailand was the 35th country in the world to have Google Street View available and in 2011, the local tourism authority actually partnered with Google for a joint initiative to promote tourism by displaying images of top attractions and streets in several major cities.

This is not the first time the Google Street View project has had problems. The project is aimed at mapping the world with the help of photographs taken from passing cars, but its technology also picks up Wi-Fi signals. UK authorities recently ordered Google to delete all personal data gathered that way or otherwise face a lawsuit.

Palestinian hacker earns job offers

The stunt cost the 30-year-old Palestinian the bounty, but earned him praise and numerous job offer.

YATTA, West Bank (AP) - After discovering a privacy bug on Facebook, unemployed Palestinian programmer Khalil Shreateh said he just wanted to collect the traditional $500 bounty the social network giant offers to those who voluntarily expose its glitches.
But when Facebook ignored his first two reports, Shreateh took his message to the top and hacked into CEO Mark Zuckerberg s personal page to prove his point.
"Sorry for breaking your privacy," he wrote the Facebook founder, "I has no other choice to make after all the reports I sent to Facebook team ... as you can see I am not in your friend list and yet i can post to your timeline."
The stunt cost the 30-year-old Palestinian the bounty, but earned him praise and numerous job offers.
for being able to get to the boss of the world s most ubiquitous social network.
Shreateh, who lives near the West Bank city of Hebron and has been unable to find a job since graduating two years ago with a degree in information technology, told Facebook that he found a way that allowed anyone to post on anyone else s wall. "I told them that you have a vulnerability and you need to close it," he told The Associated Press. "I wasn t looking to be famous. I just wanted to make a point to Mark (Zuckerberg)."
In a message posted to the Hacker News, a user-driven security news site, Facebook software engineer Matthew Jones said the initial report was poorly worded, although he acknowledged that the company should have pressed for more information.
"As a few other commenters have pointed out, we get hundreds of reports every day," Jones wrote. "Many of our best reports come from people whose English isn t great though this can be challenging, it s something we work with just fine and we have paid out over $1 million to hundreds of reporters. However, many of the reports we get are nonsense or misguided, and even those ... provide some modicum of reproduction instructions."
Nevertheless, he said, "we should have pushed back asking for more details here."
He went on to say that Shreateh would not be paid from Facebook s bounty program because he d violated the company s terms of service namely by posting items to the Facebook pages of users he should not have had access to.
"The more important issue here is with how the bug was demonstrated using the accounts of real people without their permission. Exploiting bugs to impact real users is not acceptable behavior for a white hat," he said, using an industry term for ethical security experts.
Jones added that the bug was fixed Thursday. Facebook declined to comment beyond the post.
The bug and Facebook s response to it has become a talking point in information security circles, with many speculating that the Palestinian could have helped himself to thousands of dollars had he chosen to sell the information on the black market.
Shreateh said he was initially disappointed by the Facebook response but that after being inundated by job offers from all over the world he is pleased with how things worked out.
"I am looking for a good job to start a normal life like everybody," he said. "I am so proud to be the Palestinian who discovered that exploit in Facebook."

Tired of helping the CIA? Quit Facebook, Venezuela minister urges

Tired of helping the CIA? Quit Facebook, Venezuela minister urges
A Venezuelan government minister on Wednesday urged citizens to shut Facebook accounts to avoid being unwitting informants for the US Central Intelligence Agency, referring to recent revelations about US surveillance programs.

Edward Snowden, a former US National Security Agency contractor who is stuck in a Moscow airport while seeking to avoid capture by the United States, last month leaked details about American intelligence agencies obtaining information from popular websites including Facebook.

"Comrades: cancel your Facebook accounts, you've been working for free as CIA informants. Review the Snowden case!" wrote Prisons Minister Iris Varela on her Twitter account.

Venezuela has offered to provide asylum for Snowden, but he has not responded and appears unable to leave the transit zone of Sheremetyevo International Airport.

He exposed a program known as Prism that relied on customer data supplied by major technology companies.

"Countries and people that have fallen victim to gringo spying should sue the United States to ensure fair compensation. We're going to bankrupt the US economy!" wrote Varela, known for radical rhetoric and ardent support of the late socialist leader Hugo Chavez.

Venice tourists get shock bill at outdoor coffee bar

Venice tourists get shock bill at outdoor coffee bar
ROME: Tourists going to Venice beware - and make sure you read the fine print.

Everyone knows the lagoon city can be expensive but seven tourists from Rome got a bitter surprise when their bill for four coffees and three liqueurs at an outdoor cafe topped 100 euros ($130).

The scene of the mishap was the famed Caffe Lavena in St. Mark's Square, where 19th century German composer Richard Wagner, who died in Venice in 1883, sat to have his morning coffee every day when he lived in the city.

What the Roman tourists - who posted their receipt on Facebook - apparently did not notice when looking at the menu was the "music surcharge" of six euros per person. It added up to 42 euros, or nearly half of the bill.

The owners of the famous cafe, which opened in 1750 and where clients are served by white-jacketed waiters as a chamber orchestra plays, defended themselves.

They said all the prices (six euros for a coffee and 10 for a liqueur) as well as the music surcharge, are printed on the menus.

"If they found the prices too high, they could have got up and gone somewhere else, like many people do, or have the coffee standing at the bar inside, where it costs one euro," Lavena's manager, Massimo Milanese, told the Corriere della Sera newspaper.

Time To Say Goodbye To Windows XP

We’ve all been Windows users at some point. Even many hardcore Mac users today probably have a strong history with the much maligned operating system. One thing that everyone will probably agree with is this: Windows XP is one of the best operating systems that Microsoft has served us consumers. And now, it is time to say goodbye to Windows XP.
Goodbye to Windows XP
It’s official. Support for Windows XP is ending on the 8th of August 2014. As is the norm with these things, users are given ample time to make the switch if necessary. For individual users, this should be an easy fix. The chances are you’re using Windows 8 already anyway.
For businesses, though, especially the small to medium sized ones, the one-year breathing space might be more than necessary. After all, it’s not only about changing operating systems. Hardware upgrades and new purchases may also be called for. Then there’s the learning curve to get used to the changes.
Of course, one may opt to stick with Windows XP till their device dies on them. Microsoft is not stopping anyone from doing that, but without support for the software, it’s very much akin to having a car for which you can’t buy parts anymore.  At the end of the day, you might as well make it easier on you then, by saying goodbye to Windows XP.
It is worth noting, though, that Microsoft has not scrimped on its efforts to convince people to stop using XP. In fact, they released an infographic wishing XP a happy retirement, urging people to upgrade to Windows 8. Considering the fact that 37.7 percent of PCs in the world are still running on Windows XP, Microsoft’s efforts are justified.

Twitter University

School is back, no kids really it is! Well for social media development students it is anyway.  Everybody’s favourite micro-blogging website recently announced the opening of Twitter University.  The program is designed for engineers to get world-class technical training and gain the abilities to teach the skills which they have already mastered.
TU
Chris Fry, senior vice president of engineering, said in a recent blog post: ”We want Twitter to be the best place in the world for engineers to work” The social networking company already offers its employees an array of training opportunities, ranging from orientation classes to iOS Bootcamp courses.  These are taught by team members in an effort to develop a new skills set. “I’ve been inspired by those efforts,” Fry said. “Being able to continually learn on the job and develop a sense of expertise or mastery is a fundamental factor in success in the technology industry and long term happiness at a company.”  Twitter University will be vital for the company’s engineering department, he said.
To help run this program, Twitter has purchased an open-source training company called Marakana.  The company’s founders Sasa and Marko Gargenta have been teaching classes at the social network headquarters for several months now and “have been continually impressed by the engineering leadership, the company’s commitment to learning and the cultural fit between our two companies” they said.  Over the past ten years, Marakana has developed courses on HTML 5, Java, Android, Scala, Python, Hadoop, jQuery and other languages, delivering classes to more than 100,000 professional software engineers.
Developers are able to keep up with classes by following @TwU; the account already gained more than 700 followers since it launch.  That’s great for software developers, but what about us mere mortals?  Well, Twitter will eventually be releasing some of the University content online for anyone who would like to learn!

Google & Microsoft Conflict Over Windows Phone YouTube App

Windows phone users who want to watch funny cat videos on YouTube won’t be able to do it any time soon. At least not until Microsoft and Google find a way to solve their long-running dispute over a Windows phone YouTube app.
The bitter row between the two giants began earlier this year and escalated last week when Google blocked a new YouTube Windows phone app just two days after it was released. Google, which owns YouTube, said the app violates its terms of service.
YouTube Pulled Windows Phone
Google said the decision was made because Microsoft has not made the changes required and did not build a YouTube app based on HTML5, as instructed. Microsoft responded that neither Android nor iPhone apps are built on HTML5, so Google’s accusation was clearly manufactured.
A lawyer for Microsoft, David Howard, said Google’s action clearly shows that the search engine giant was deliberately trying to hinder the Windows phone platform by denying it access to YouTube.
Howard insisted that Google’s requirements are impossible to meet and are inconsistent, since the company is not asking the same of its own Android platform or Apple’s mobile operating system. The reasons cited by Google seem manufactured, so that Microsoft cannot offer Windows phone users the same experience as other mobile platform users are getting, the lawyer said.
Google in turn defended its decision and said Microsoft failed to make the necessary browser upgrades for the YouTube Windows app. Instead, the company re-released the same Windows phone app that was already rejected by Google earlier this year, for violating its terms of service.
Back in May, Google asked Microsoft to take down its YouTube app from the Windows Phone Store because it did not allow the display of advertisements. The two companies found common ground on the matter and announced that they would work together on developing an app that would respect the video website’s terms. The Windows app Google blocked last week is presumably the result of the collaboration.
It’s unclear what will happen now, but what’s for certain is that Microsoft needs access to YouTube for its smartphones more than Google actually needs the relatively small number of Windows phone users. Windows phone is currently the third most popular mobile OS, after Android (79% of the market) and iOS (at 14.2%). The Windows phone holds 3.3% of the smartphone market.
What do you think may happen? Will Microsoft retaliate with a lawsuit, as some analysts suggest? Or will they just play nice and do whatever it takes to get their Windows phone YouTube app unblocked?

Ways to hack/protect the Facebook account

5 Ways to hack a Facebook account, something most of our readers always wanted to Learn, something new about Facebook Hacking.
Learn the best attacks for Facebook Hacking with their advantages and drawbacks.
Note:- This tutorial is for educational purpose only and may not be used for any blackhat purpose. The prime aim of this tutorial is to create awareness so that you guys can protect yourself from getting hacked.
Before learning the actual procedure you should know about different types of attacks, their drawbacks and prevention against these attacks .

1) Phishing :
The first and very basic way of hacking Facebook accounts is via Phishing. Phishing is actually creating fake web pages to steal user’s credentials like email, passwords, phone no,etc.
DRAWBACK :
Users nowadays are aware of these type of attacks and one can not be easily fooled using this attack. You need some social engineering to trick someone.

Prevention :
Always check the page URL before logging in. This is the most trusted and effective way one can use to avoid himself from phishing.
Other way is to use some good Antivirus software which will warn you if you visit a harmful phishing page.
Even if somehow you have already entered your credentials in a phisher, Immediately Change your password.

2) Keylogging :
This is another good way of hacking Facebook accounts. In this type of attack a hacker simply sends an infected file having keylogger in it to the victim. If the victim executes that file on his pc, whatever he types will be mailed/uploaded to hacker’s server. The advantage of this attack is that the victim won’t know that hacker is getting every Bit of data he is typing. Another big advantage is that hacker will get passwords of all the accounts used on that PC.
DRAWBACK :
Keyloggers are often detected as threats by good antiviruses. Hacker must find a way to protect it from antivirus.
Prevention :
Execute the file only if you trust the sender.
Use online scanner such as novirusthanks.org
Use good antivirus and update it regularly .

3) Trojans/backdoors :
This is an advanced level topic. It consists of a server and a client. In this type of attack the attacker sends the infected server to the victim. After execution the infected server i.e. Trojan on the victim’s PC opens a backdoor and now the hacker can do whatever he wants with the victim’s PC .
DRAWBACK :
Trojans are often detected as threats by good antiviruses. Hacker must find a way to protect it from antivirus.
Prevention :
Execute the file only if you trust the sender.
Use online scanner such as novirusthanks.org
Use good antivirus and update it regularly .

4)Sniffing
It consists of stealing session in progress. In this type of attack an attacker makes connection with server and client and relays message between them, making them believe that they are talking to each other directly.
DRAWBACK :
If user is logged out then attacker is also logged out and the session is lost.
It is difficult to sniff on SSL protected networks.
Prevention :
Always use SSL secured connections.
Always keep a look at the url if the http:// is not changed to https:// it means that sniffing is active on your network.
5)Social Engineering :
This method includes guessing and fooling the clients to give their own passwords. In this type of attack, a hacker sends a fake mail which is very convincing and appealing and asks the user for his password.
Answering the security questions also lies under this category.
Drawback :
It is not easy to convince someone to make him give his password.
Guessing generally doesn’t always work ( Although if you are lucky enough it may work!).
Prevention :
Never give your password to anyone
Don’t believe in any sort of emails which asks for your password
6) Session Hijacking
In a session hijacking attack an attacker steals victims cookies, cookies stores all the necessary logging Information about one’s account, using this info an attacker can easily hack anybody’s account. If you get the cookies of the Victim you can Hack any account the Victim is Logged into i.e. you can hack Facebook, Google, Yahoo.
Drawbacks :
You will be logged out when user is logged out.
You will not get the password of the user’s account.
Will not work if the user is using HTTPS connections.
Prevention :
Always work on SSL secured connections.
Always keep a look at the url if the http:// is not changed to https:// it means that sniffing is active on your network.
Hope this post will help you to  Secure Your Facebook Account

BlackBerry CEO could get almost $55.6M

BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins could receive almost $55.6 million if the company is sold and he is ousted from the top job.
Heins would receive $48 million in equity awards, based on the company s share price at the end of its latest fiscal year, according to a regulatory filing earlier this year. He would also get $7.5 million in compensation for his salary and bonus under the change of control provisions in his contract.

The company would pay $72,000 in benefits and retirement savings. The plan was approved by shareholders at its annual meeting on July 9.

BlackBerry announced that a sale of the company was one option that would be considered under a strategic review of the company, which has lost market share to Apple and Android-based phones. The long-awaited debut of its new phones this year has failed to turn around the struggling smartphone maker.

The company s strategic review is being headed by Timothy Dattels, a BlackBerry director and a senior partner at TPG Capital, one of the world s largest private equity firms. Fairfax Financial and its chief executive, Prem Watsa, which hold approximately 11 percent of BlackBerry, are considered among possible buyers.
Watsa resigned from the BlackBerry board on Monday due to potential conflicts of interest. If Heins were to be removed from his job at BlackBerry without a change of control, he would receive a package valued at $22 million, including $5.8 million in compensation for his salary and bonus, $72,000 in benefits and retirement savings and $16.1 million in equity awards. The BlackBerry, pioneered in 1999, had been the dominant smartphone for on-the-go business people and other consumers before Apple debuted the iPhone in 2007. In the years since, BlackBerry Ltd. has been hammered by competition from the iPhone as well as Android-based rivals. Heins was named CEO in January 2012, replacing co-founders and co-CEOs Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie, who stepped down after shareholders demanded a management shakeup. This past January, the company unveiled new phones running a revamped operating system called BlackBerry 10 designed to better compete. But its market share continues to lag. IDC said last week BlackBerry has fallen to fourth place in global smartphone sales, now trailing Microsoft. BlackBerry also warned in June of future losses. CIBC analyst Todd Coupland suggested BlackBerry could be worth as much as $20 per share in a takeover, and that big technology companies as well as private equity firms could be interested. Mike Walkley, an analyst with Canaccord Genuity, said Tuesday the stock is up on takeover speculation. He believes the company is worth $8 per share.

Happy Independence day (14 August) : It was 66 years ago when....

It was the 14th of August when the Muslims of the subcontinent were able to get a land of their own, where they could live life according to their religion. 14th August 1947, Pakistan gained Independence after remarkable efforts made my Mr. Muhammad Ali Jinnah who was a man of great caliber and had the belief that Muslims could only live happily when they would own a country led by their own people and a country that would be according to the ideology of Islam. The Muslims of the subcontinent gave many sacrifices for several years as they were not allowed to practice their own religion with freedom as they were the minority. However, the efforts made by people like Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Allama Iqbal and Sir Syed Ahmed Khan made sure that their sacrifices did not go in vain and they were able to provide the Muslims an independent homeland.
Independency day for any country is like a festival and the people of Pakistan celebrate this festival with enthusiasm and joy. They unite together under the green and white flag of Pakistan and rejoice their happiness with friends and family. People from all over the country have different ways of celebrating the Independence Day. Some people dress up in green and white to show their love for the country while others visit national monuments like Minar-e-Pakistan and Quaid-e-Azam's Mausoleum. Many people also use this opportunity to meet up with relatives and give gifts to their loved ones.
Children also enjoy this day to the fullest. There are functions arranged across all schools in the country where children sing national songs, dress up in green and white and enjoy scrumptious meals. They do not have regular classes on this day which allows them to have free time off due to which children look forward to the Independence Day. There is also a trend in many homes to decorate their houses with flags and paper flags and from adults to children everyone participates in doing the decorations. Such is the spirit of the people of Pakistan as patriotism runs in their veins.
It is necessary that people of the country pay tribute to their heroes as it was only their efforts which allowed them to have an independent nation. The people of Pakistan also remember and pay tribute to those who dedicated their lives to earn freedom for them. A change of guard ceremony is conducted on the national monuments of the country including the mausoleum of Muhammad Ali Jinnah the founder of Pakistan and at the Mausoleum of Allama Iqbal who was also the father of the ideology of Pakistan. There are various Independence Day programs aired on the television throughout the day and multiple concerts held during night time in various parts of the country.
Although the people of Pakistan celebrate the Independence Day with patriotism and great passion, they should remember what Jinnah's dream was and they should always questions themselves whether they have made this country according to his dreams or they have forgotten the reason for the formation of Pakistan.

History of Internet in Pakistan

History of Internet in Pakistan

The Internet industry in Pakistan has come a long way when the first dial up E-mail service was introduced in the country by Imran-Net in 1992-93. Serious support was accorded to Email services in Pakistan with the launch of a UNDP funded project called SDNPK - Sustainable Development Networking Programme in Islamabad in 1993; on the lines of such projects launched by UNDP in other countries. This self-sustainable project was meant to provide dial-up, UUCP based email service to general public and support to projects related to education, sustainable development, NGO’s and other related areas. These store and forward email services were charged by the service providers on bytes size.
The size of SDNPK subscriber base expanded quickly since it served a very important and un-addressed market segment. A number of customers in cities outside of Islamabad also joined the network since the cost of communicating via email was substantially cheaper than either international fax or international dial up services. The project was sustained by UNDP funding for a number of years and the activities expanded to other cities such as Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar where nodes were set up. The project however lost its charm after many ISPs entered the online market.
In 1995, Digicom, an entrepreneurial Internet venture launched on-line Internet service in Karachi. This heralded the beginning of Internet industry in Pakistan. Brainnet, Paknet and COMSATS followed the suit.
